Description

#4918 Colt 1885 “Lightning Rifle” RBFMCB 38CLMR (same as the standard 38/40) with a 7-7+ bore on a scale of 10, and smooth tight action, 14XXX range (1887). Early “Open-Top” frame, made without the sliding dust cover, correct Colt rear sight and Rocky Mountain style front. VG smooth grey-brown metal with some overall light staining and minor roughness, the Rampant Colt logo on the left side is fully visible, as is the barrel address. The wood appears somewhat dry, probably from having been stripped with either paint remover or strong detergent and does have a couple of repaired cracks on the stock. Otherwise, just average wear and about 20% wear to the forearm checking. This model of slide action Colt was made as an agreement with Winchester, and was the non-lever replacement for the 1883 lever action Colt-Burgess rifle when Winchester threatened to start making revolvers if Colt continued making their lever action 1883 Model. But for any of those who are lucky enough to have shot these Lightning rifles, they sure were aptly named! The speed of cocking and emptying the magazine on the slide actioned rifle is much greater than any lever gun. So if you happen to have a lever gun, do NOT get into a “lead spitting contest” with some fellow who has a Lightning Rifle! They are “wicked quick and lightning fast” and he will beat you like a rented mule! About VG-VG+ $2475
