3042P Colt 1861 Navy Richards Mason Conversion, 38cf, 7 ½, Fine

Description

3042P Colt 1861 Navy Richards Mason Conversion, 7 ½ inch barrel, cal. 38 cf, manuf. 1873-75, SN 3XXX. Colt manufactured only 2,200 of the 61 Navy RM conversions in 38 cf. and 38 rf. The early 61 Navy OMC or original metallic cartridge, were in 38 rim fire as the newly made 38 center fire cartridge was not readily available until late 1873 and not well distributed around the country for purchase. As the 38 cf ammo became more available less 38rf conversions were made. I believe this fine example is a percussion range true conversion. It has the filler under the barrel for the rammer wedge, it has the concentric rings on the ejector head, it has both the Colt Patent stamp and the conversion date stamps on the side of the frame, it has the exterior loading gate spring and it has the modified percussion hammer versus the later newly made hammers with boarders on the cross-hatch. This one also has the original modified percussion cylinder with a 3049 serial number but has the correct matching serial number stamped on the back of the cylinder. This is an all matching serial numbered 61 Navy conversion including the cylinder arbor. The barrel address is clear and readable, all the serial numbers are sharp and clear except the butt which has the last 3 numbers clear, the number 3 is worn. The action is tight and correct as well as the barrel to frame fit. The bore is a bright shiny 9 as are the cylinder bores. The cylinder has 80% scene and a clearly readable Engagement line. The frame area when barrel and cylinder are removed has 90% bright case colors. The outside of the frame has 30% nice light case colors, the loading gate also has bright case colors. Overall the metal surfaces are smooth without pitting with a small area of pin pricks on top of the ejector housing in front of the cylinder from firing black powder. The brass trigger guard and back strap have a nice patina and mustard color and have not been polished. The screws appear to all be original and are in very good condition. The original grips fit like a glove, have no cracks and one worn chip on the left panel along the toe edge.
A hard to find 1861 Percussion Navy Conversion that has not been messed with.
Overall condition very good to fine.
