3034P Colt 1851 Navy, 4 Screw cut for shoulder stock, 1862, w/ holster.

Description

3034P Colt 1851 Navy, 7 ½ inch barrel, 36 cal., manuf. 1862 SN 127XXX. This is a rare variation of the 51 Navy seldom seen anymore. In N.L. Swayze’s book on the “51 Colt Navies” he has devoted Chapter II to this variation, 15 pages. The frame recoil shield area was cut out and a 4th frame screw was added to allow for the use of a shoulder stock, like the Military 60 Armies. My friend Bob Jordan, author of “Colt’s Pocket 49”, is writing a new book on 51 Navies. I emailed him the serial number on this Navy to see if he had any info on it. He said it was listed in Book 4 in the Colt Achieves as being in the War Department inventory in 1862 and was listed as having a stock with it. There are no shipping records for Book 4 according to Mr. Jordan.

This is the 3rd one of these 4 screws I have had over the years and it appears most were sold later on the civilian market. Like two of the others I have had, the back strap was changed at the factory before being sold to the civilian market to brass from steel and has a different serial number, SN137XXX with no notch for the stock.

The frame, barrel, trigger guard, cylinder, cylinder arbor and wedge are all matching, SN 127XXX. The cylinder has 80% scene with a readable Engagement line. The bore has strong rifling, light roughness, a 7+. The gun is tight, the action is correct and the screws are all in good condition. There is some original blue in protected areas of the barrel and the rammer has some bright case on the top of the area where it lays against the barrel. The metal is smooth with no pitting. The original grips show use but have no cracks or chips, only wear from the last 152 years.
I bought this one from a local collector that had it for 30+ years and it came with the time period slim Jim holster. The stitching is solid, worn areas at the top but made for the 51 Navy and fits great.
Overall condition very good.
